Appleby Care Home
Built in 2002, Appleby Care Home is a 50-bed facility for residents who require nursing or personal care in North Shields; this can include elderly care for those with dementia, disorders or injuries. As well as delivering excellent residential, nursing and dementia care, Appleby is also home to a self contained nursing environment specifically designed to support those who may benefit from living in a male only setting.
The care home is run by Clare Leonard and a team of highly qualified nurses and care assistants at varying levels, with specialist kitchen staff and personnel trained in all aspects of care.
With a skilled chef, hygiene and nutrition are held to high standards. Residents receive a balanced diet with fresh food and the kitchen has a Level 5 food hygiene rating which has been held for a number of years.
Rooms come with an en-suite, while some also feature phone points – WiFi is available throughout the home. Set in attractive gardens, the nursing home is a short distance from a nearby park and other local amenities. There is a large car park at the front of the facility, and visiting hours are not restricted.
In order to keep residents active, and to promote social habits, staff at Appleby regularly arrange activities, including big screen cinema viewings, arts and crafts, armchair aerobics, visits from local churches and more. Trips out to the theatre and to local parks, as well as the seaside, have previously been arranged to stimulate residents who are able to travel. On top of this, family and friends can visit the local area with residents where possible.
Family days are arranged, including coffee mornings once a month, weekly cinema showings and picnics in good weather – partners of residents are also encouraged to visit for meals.

Welcome to Appleby Care Home in North Shields.
We provide care of the highest quality for the elderly on a permanent or respite basis, in lovely comfortable surroundings. Our team of experienced care professionals constantly undergo training to provide outstanding care and support to all of our residents.
There are two units within Appleby Care Home. The ground floor and part of the upper floor make up the mixed dementia unit. There is also a specialist male-only service on the upper floor for male service users who may have behaviours that are challenging.
We also offer care for convalescence, Parkinson’s disease, stroke, palliative care, and dementia.
Appleby offers a safe and secure environment promoting independence and well-being. There are a number of care packages available offering long and short-term care including nursing.
Each room has en-suite facilities and the home has a number of communal rooms. We have a large garden and patio for residents to sit outside in the warmer months and help with planting flowers and plants. We also have a pond and ducks often visit the home.
The focal point of the garden is a large summer house which is used as an Ice cream parlour in the summer and as Santa’s Grotto in the run-up to Christmas.
Our on-site activities co-ordinator develops a monthly programme with the needs and capabilities of the residents in mind, ensuring that there is always something exciting to do at Appleby. We also have a minibus to take our residents on outings in the local area.
Our philosophy is simple; we want everyone to enjoy life to the full. We never forget that all our residents are individuals and we treat them with dignity, privacy and respect while offering freedom of choice and as much independence as possible.
